MAMP doesn’t add PHP runtime binaries to the system path by default, so we must do so manually.

To use pear with MAMP first find the /bin directory of whichever PHP version you’re using. For myself it was PHP 5.4.4, so the directory was:

/Applications/MAMP/bin/php/php5.4.4/bin/

To use pear we have to add that directory to our PATH, using bash it’d look like:

echo export PATH=$PATH:/Applications/MAMP/bin/php/php5.4.4/bin/ >> ~/.bash_profile
source ~/.bash_profile

If you’re using ZSH it’d be:

echo export PATH=$PATH:/Applications/MAMP/bin/php/php5.4.4/bin/ >> ~/.zshrc
source ~/.zshrc
